The Teacher
Boomer. Five years old, a handsome and dignified Cavalier King Charles Spaniel — and yes, related to that King Charles. It’s in the breed name. It’s practically a legal document. Duties include: teaching a seventy-year-old human to use AI, supervising all camera work, approving all snacks, and maintaining standards in a household that once tried to serve kibble from a plastic bowl. British by bearing, Californian by paperwork. Grumpy in the mornings and secretly — secretly — rather proud of his student.
The Student
Uncle. Born and raised in Okinawa — military brat, Kubasaki High grad — with island roots on his father’s side going back to Oahu. Thirty-five-plus years in Silicon Valley semiconductor equipment: he helped build the machines that made the chips that ran the world, back when the world ran slower. Retired now, in Fremont, California, and doing the thing everyone says they’ll do but he’s actually doing: learning something completely new at seventy. Something he’ll probably forget before he’s seventy-one — which is why we’re preparing him properly, with a second brain and a small company of AI helpers that remember everything so he doesn’t have to.
In early 2027, we leave. Okinawa first — back to where he started — then onward: Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and wherever the long way round leads. Ten years, maybe fifteen. Slowly. That’s the point. And we’ll come home every year for his mental — I mean medical — checkups.
